Same Day Crowns Brattleboro Vermont Dentist

If you’ve ever had a dental crown placed, you know the drill: two separate appointments, a temporary crown in between, and a week or two of being careful about what you eat on that side of your mouth. That's been the standard for a long time, and it's the experience most people still expect when they hear the word “crown.” At our Brattleboro location, an on-site lab and Glidewell technology now makes it possible to design, fabricate, and place your permanent crown in a single appointment.

What the Traditional Crown Process Looks Like

To understand what's changed, it helps to know what the traditional process involved. A conventional crown requires at least two appointments. At the first, the dentist prepares the tooth, takes a physical impression using a tray of putty-like material, and places a temporary crown. The impression is then sent to an off-site dental lab, which fabricates the permanent crown and ships it back, and that process typically takes one to two weeks. You would return for a second appointment to have the temporary removed and the permanent crown cemented.

How Same-Day Dental Crowns Work

Same-day dental crowns replace the multi-week, multi-appointment workflow with a single visit, made possible by bringing the fabrication process in-house.

You'll go from preparation to permanent crown in one appointment, using Glidewell technology. The process works like this:

  1. Digital scan. Instead of a physical impression, you’ll get a precise digital scan of your tooth. This produces a highly accurate 3D model without the discomfort of traditional impression trays.

  2. Crown design. Using that scan, your crown is designed digitally and shaped to fit your specific tooth anatomy and bite.

  3. On-site milling. In our practice specifically, the crown is milled directly at our Brattleboro lab, not sent to a third-party facility. The fabrication happens while you're still at the practice, and you are welcome to rest in our reception area or run an errand while you wait.

  4. Same-day placement. Once the crown is ready, it's checked for fit, adjusted as needed, and cemented all before you leave.

What Glidewell Technology Makes Possible

Glidewell is one of the most established names in dental technology. Their milling systems are built for precision, producing crowns that meet the same clinical standards as those fabricated in off-site labs, with the added advantage of being produced on-site and on-demand.

Having an on-site lab equipped with Glidewell technology means your dentist can control every step of the process. If a fit adjustment is needed before placement, it can be made immediately while you’re still there. There's no shipping, no lag time, and no relying on external communication with a third party to get things right.

The crowns are made from BruxZir zirconia, Glidewell's flagship restorative material which has been chosen for its combination of strength and natural appearance. BruxZir is backed by a lifetime warranty and it's the same material used in traditional crown workflows, so you can rest assured that choosing same-day doesn't mean choosing a lesser product.

Why This Matters Beyond Convenience

One fewer appointment is a meaningful thing for most people. Taking time off work, arranging childcare, and making two trips to the dentist are real friction points. Eliminating the back and forth is important, but the benefits go beyond scheduling.

Digital scanning is more accurate than physical impressions. A traditional putty impression can distort slightly from movement, moisture, or the natural limits of the material. A digital scan captures tooth geometry precisely, which translates directly to a better-fitting crown. A crown that fits well seats properly, lasts longer, and is less likely to cause issues down the road.

Skipping the temporary crown also removes a variable. Temporaries are designed to be short-term, so they can come loose, are not as strong as permanent restorations, and patients often have to manage them carefully for a week or two. Same-day crowns eliminate that window entirely.

At Horizon Dental, we approach technology the same way we approach care: as a clinical commitment, not a selling point. Same-day crowns are part of how we practice because they produce a better outcome and a better experience for the patient, and that's the standard we hold every investment in our practice to.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

A same-day crown appointment is longer than a standard visit, so you should plan for a couple hours from start to finish. Here's a general sense of how that time breaks down:

  1. Tooth preparation and digital scanning (similar timeframe to a traditional first crown appointment)

  2. On-site milling typically takes 40 minutes, during which you are welcome to wait in our reception area or run an errand while you wait.

  3. Fit check, any minor adjustments, and permanent placement

When you leave, you leave with your permanent crown in place.

If you have questions about whether a same-day crown is the right fit for your specific situation, our team is glad to walk through it with you before anything is scheduled.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are same-day dental crowns and how do they work?

Same-day dental crowns are permanent crowns designed, fabricated, and placed in a single dental appointment. At our Brattleboro location, we use Glidewell technology and an on-site lab to digitally scan the prepared tooth, mill the crown in-house, and cement it all in one visit.

What is the difference between a same-day crown and a traditional crown?

A traditional crown requires two appointments and a waiting period of one to two weeks while the crown is fabricated off-site. A same-day crown compresses that entire process into a single visit using digital scanning and on-site milling technology. The clinical result is the same: a well-fitting, durable permanent crown.

Do same-day crowns require a temporary crown?

No. Because the permanent crown is fabricated and placed during the same appointment, there's no need for a temporary restoration.

Are same-day crowns as good as traditional crowns?

Yes. Same-day crowns produced with Glidewell technology meet the same clinical standards as traditionally fabricated crowns. Digital scanning is also more precise than physical impressions, which means the fit is often more accurate. The material used is high-strength and designed for long-term durability.

How long does it take to get a same-day crown?

Plan for a couple of hours for the full appointment. The time includes tooth preparation, digital scanning, on-site milling, and placement. Most patients find this significantly more convenient than spreading the process across two separate visits.

What technology is used to make same-day crowns?

We use Glidewell technology and an on-site milling lab at our Brattleboro location. The process begins with a digital scan of the prepared tooth, which is used to design the crown digitally. The crown is then milled on-site and placed the same day.
